Its purpose is to increase the size of the pelvic outlet to permit the delivery of a baby.

It is estimated that approximately 1,500 Irish women unknowingly and without consent had the procedure preformed on them .The procedure left the majority of women permanently injured and experiencing severe side effects including impaired mobility, incontinence, depression and back pain.

The majority of the procedures took place at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Waterford Regional Hospital, Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe and the Mid-Western Regional Maternity Hospital, Limerick.
